Destiny is calling…

Like most people, I have a love/hate relationship with Facebook and I deliberately keep my friends list on the small side because of it. Really, I don’t want to be inundated with all the junk. And the settings I adjust to hide the stuff seem to change for no discernible reason, all in the name of “updates”.

Every now and then I get a little blast from the past. And I recently got one that made me pull up short… way short.

I have an 18-year-old daughter who just graduated high school and is prepping for college and a part time job. Typical kid.

Said kid spent most of her youth at a particular church (that shall remain nameless).

Into my feed pops up pic of the pastor’s kid – a girl who is barely 21, married to the youth pastor at her dad’s church (really?), and pregnant, as in about to pop. Oh, and her education stops at high school.

Her parents are thrilled; she “has destiny written all over her”!

Wait… this is what I should want for my daughter? This is “destiny” for a church-going female? No education, married and pregnant at 21, and still under daddy’s wing (since he’s the head pastor).

Pardon me while I take a few deep, cleansing breaths, assure myself that my kid has more sense than that her own sense of destiny and rejoice that my life is no longer governed by those attitudes.

Ah, much better now. I can feel sanity returning.

Hey, Facebook! How do I make sure this stuff never pops up again?!
